Pope Leo VIV

The Coat of Arms of Pope Leo XIV

The Vatican has unveiled the official portrait, signature, and coat of arms of Pope Leo XIV, just days after his historic election as the first U.S.-born pope.
The portrait shows the Holy Father in traditional papal vesture — red mozzetta, embroidered stole, and golden pectoral cross — marking a visual return to formality after the simpler style of his predecessor. His signature includes the classic “P.P.” for Pastor Pastorum (“Shepherd of Shepherds”).

His coat of arms reflects both Marian devotion and Augustinian identity: a fleur-de-lis on blue for the Virgin Mary, and a heart pierced by an arrow resting on a book — the symbol of St. Augustine. Beneath it, his episcopal motto: “In Illo uno unum” (“In the one Christ we are one”), drawn from the saint’s commentary on Psalm 127 and pointing to Pope Leo’s desire for unity in the Church.
